Mediation Training Basic Module

The theoretical training and the development of the necessary skills are spread over 12 teaching days (and 2x half-day exams).

In addition to acquiring a thorough theoretical knowledge, the training requires a strong motivation and commitment from the participant to master the skills of the mediator. A critical reflection on one’s own personality and functioning might be confronting but fundamental.

The following topics are covered:

  • Raising awareness about ‘mediation’: the general principles of mediation (ethics/philosophy).
  • Psychological aspects: the personality and communication models crucial in the development of the mediation skills.
  • Sociological aspects: ethics, differences in norms and values, tolerance, autonomy, confidentiality.
  • Conflict theory: own conflict management style with its strengths and pitfalls; learn to apply various styles to optimize the result.
  • Communication: knowledge with extensive practice of communication skills.
  • Ethics and Deontology: Ethical and Deontological Aspects in Mediation.
  • Theoretical and practical aspects of law: a deepening of the Belgian mediation law and the deontology as determined by the Federal Mediation Commission.
  • The mediation process: all aspects of the mediation process integrated into one coherent whole.

In the practical exercises we start from our own personality evaluation. This serves as a basis for application in the interaction models (Roos van Leary, communication models, negotiation methods, mediation skills) and ultimately in the integration into the mediation process as a whole. The various role plays and case discussions ensure a deepening of the subject matter and an effective development of the necessary skills. In this way we simulate a complete mediation process.

General Information & Location

This training is only suitable for motivated participants!

From academic year 2021-2022, the basic module is 88 contact hours spread over 12 days (and 2x half-day exams). This is in accordance with the criteria of the Belgian Federal Mediation Commission.

The effectiveness of a mediator is determined by:

  1. Knowledge (mediation, legal, sociological, psychological and communicative)
  2. Self-knowledge and self-reflection
  3. Intensive acquisition of the required mediation skills

Our vision is that this is only possible in a training through:

  1. For participants who wants more than a diploma
  2. Intense guidance during the training process

During this training you will be taken along in the different knowledge domains in a very interactive way. The structure is such that we build up the knowledge domain, building block after building block, in such a way that you make it your own in an interactive way. You learn to thoroughly interpret the knowledge domains in your own environment and to apply them in mediation.
Self-knowledge and self-reflection is an essential part of the quality mediator. It is the only way to optimally use yourself and your acquired skills in the mediations that you will supervise.
The required mediation skills can only be acquired through intensive role-playing practice. You will experience the mediation conversation as an observer, party and of course as a mediator. This highly individualized trajectory ensures that you master the mediation skills by systematically improving yourself in steps through self-reflection, self-direction, feedback from your fellow students and the intensive supervision of the teachers.

This training is a very structured and coherent whole in which you learn to combine and apply all elements through integration.
This is a unique and first step towards a quality mediator.

Lessons start 9:00 AM – End lessons maximum 6:00 PM

You have the option of taking the same class day in a different location. You can use this according to your personal wishes.

This training consists of on-site supervision and requires intensive effort and participation from the participants.
Our many years of experience indicate that mediation training is only effective and of high quality if these conditions are met.

To guarantee this quality, we allow a maximum of 12 participants in the Basic Theory.
In the Basic Practice module you will be guided in small groups.

Before you are admitted, we invite you to an interview where your motivation is thoroughly discussed (no preparation required).
We provide you with the necessary information with regard to the training program and the exercise of the profession of ‘accredited mediator’.

A warm welcome with Walter and Natasha!
